Sagan-Nocturnes

Program note:

Carl Sagan was an influential American astronomer, astrophysicist, and science communicator known for his deep curiosity about the cosmos and his ability to communicate complex scientific ideas with poetic clarity. Through his writings, including the beloved book Cosmos and the television series of the same name, Sagan explored humanity’s place in the universe, often weaving together science, philosophy, and reflections on life, love, and existence. His words, rich in wonder and empathy, resonate on an emotional level that transcends scientific knowledge, making them a compelling source of inspiration for music. Sagan’s reflections on the fragility of life and the boundless expanse of the universe provide an interplay of themes perfectly suited to the expressive and introspective nature of music.

Seeing the night sky at Sjövik, with Sagan’s words fresh in my mind, provided all the necessary inspiration to get started with these pieces; I have chosen to call them “nocturnes”, though they are really more like miniatures or preludes in character, mainly because of this inspiration: short meditations on life and the night sky.
